This week, I'm sharing the single most effective tip for cracking into that hidden job market.

This week's action: Ignore your closest contacts. Instead, scroll through your LinkedIn connections or old contacts and find one 'weak tie', someone you know, but not well (a former colleague from another department, someone you met at a conference, a friend of a friend). Your action is to revive that connection with a simple, non-transactional message.

Why this matters:



Here’s the counter-intuitive secret, backed by decades of sociological research: new opportunities don't usually come from our best friends. Our 'strong ties' know the same people and information we do. 'Weak ties' are the golden ticket. They are the bridges to entirely new networks, companies, and pools of information. Reviving a weak tie is a low-pressure way to get on someone's radar. When a role comes up in their company, your recent, friendly message might make you the first person they think of, giving you access long before a job is posted.


Where to start? What to say:The goal is to reconnect, not to ask for a job in the first message. Keep it simple, light, and genuine.

  • Find them: Look at 2nd-degree connections on LinkedIn, attendees of a past webinar, or colleagues from a job you had 5+ years ago.


  • Example 1 (Former Colleague): "Hi [Name], it's been a while since our days at [Old Company]! I saw your recent post about [Project X] and it looked fascinating. Just wanted to say hello and hope you're doing well."


  • Example 2 (Conference Contact): "Hi [Name], we met briefly at the [Y] conference last year. I'm still thinking about your point on [Z]. Hope your fall is off to a great start."


Start the conversation. Build the rapport. The opportunity will follow.
