This week's action: Identify one unwritten 'rule' or deep-seated belief about your career that you've consistently followed (e.g., "I must always say yes," "It's too late to change paths," "I need X qualification before I can pursue Y," "Asking for help is a weakness"). Spend 5-10 minutes critically questioning if this rule still truly serves you today.

Why this matters:

We all navigate our careers with a set of personal 'rules'β€”often formed unconsciously from past advice, experiences, or perceived expectations. While some rules can be helpful guides, others become outdated, create unnecessary limitations, or simply don't align with who we are now or where we want to go. Actively questioning these ingrained beliefs is a powerful step towards breaking free from self-imposed barriers, reclaiming your agency, and ensuring your choices are driven by conscious intention, not just old programming. It can unlock surprising new perspectives and pathways.


How to identify and question your rule:


Find Your Rule: Reflect on moments you feel stuck, frustrated, or automatically react in a certain way regarding your career. What underlying belief might be driving that? Think about phrases you often tell yourself like "I always have to..." or "I can't because..."


During your 5-minute exploration, ask:

  • "Where did this belief originally come from?"

  • "How has it served me in the past?"

  • "How might it be hindering me or causing stress now?"

  • "What would be possible if I let go of or modified this rule?"

  • "What’s one small step I could take to test a new belief?"


The goal isn't to overhaul your life in 10 minutes, but to spark awareness and begin to loosen the grip of potentially limiting assumptions.
