Then, instead of judging the feeling, ask yourself this one question: "What important value, standard, or expectation of mine was being challenged or violated in that moment?"

Why this matters:


A leader's unmanaged triggers can create a culture of fear and unpredictability, causing team members to walk on eggshells. Understanding the 'why' behind your reaction allows you to create a crucial pause between a trigger and your response. In that pause lies the power to choose a more effective, mature leadership action. Your triggers aren't just flaws; they are signposts pointing directly to what you care about most—your core values. Recognizing them turns a potential liability into a powerful tool for self-awareness and emotional intelligence.


Where to start? How to deconstruct your trigger:

  • Common Triggers for Leaders: Look for reactions to things like missed deadlines, lack of preparation from others, work that doesn't meet quality standards, challenges to your plan, or unexpected problems.


  • Trace the Feeling Back (The 3 Steps):

    1. The Feeling: "I felt a flash of intense frustration."

    2. The Trigger: "It happened when a team member presented inaccurate data in a key meeting."

    3. The Violated Value: "Why? Because it undermines our credibility and shows a lack of diligence. My core value is 'excellence and rigor,' and this fell short."


  • The Goal: The objective isn't to stop having reactions, but to understand them. This insight allows you to respond thoughtfully ("Let's double-check these numbers before the next meeting") instead of reactively ("This data is wrong!").
