I work in AI. I sit on governance committees. I advise boards on AI strategy. I use AI tools every day.
So when I tell you AI cannot replace a career coach, I am not being defensive. I am being specific.
Here is the gap.
AI responds to what you ask it. A coach responds to what your question reveals about what you have not asked yet.
That is not a small distinction. That is the entire difference between information and insight.
AI does genuinely useful things for your career. Cover letters, interview prep, salary benchmarks, decision frameworks at two in the morning. Fast, available, no judgment.
But the professionals I coach are almost never stuck because they lack information.
They are stuck because they cannot see something about themselves that is obvious to anyone observing from the outside.
The director getting passed over does not need a better resume. They need someone to tell them that how they show up in leadership meetings is signalling exactly the wrong things to the people who make promotion decisions.
The executive considering leaving does not need a pros and cons list. They need someone to ask whether they have actually exhausted what is available to them from the inside before making a permanent decision based on a temporary state.
AI cannot see any of this. Not because it is not smart enough. Because it only has your words. It has no outside.
