With the fall rush in full swing, our inboxes are overflowing. We're all trying to move work forward, but what if one of our most common habits is actually creating more work and slowing everything down?


This week, let's fix the last sentence of your emails.


Let's get started.


This week's action: For the next three days, before you hit 'send' on any important email, pause and re-read the final sentence. If it's a vague, passive phrase like "Let me know your thoughts," rewrite it to be either a direct question or a clear next step.

Why this matters:



Vague endings create cognitive work for the recipient. You're forcing them to figure out what you actually want from them. This leads to delayed responses, endless back-and-forth chains, and stalled projects. When you end with a direct question ("Can you approve this by Thursday?") or a clear next step ("My next step is to draft the proposal based on this"), you eliminate ambiguity. You make it easy for the other person to reply and you keep the momentum going. This small shift moves you from a passive communicator to a driver of action.


Simple Swaps for a Stronger Finish:

  • Instead of: "Let me know your thoughts."
    Try: "What's the one thing we need to solve first? I'm free to discuss tomorrow at 10 AM."


  • Instead of: "Just wanted to share this for your review.
    "Try: "My next step is to incorporate feedback. Please send any input by EOD Thursday."


  • Instead of: "Looking forward to hearing from you.
    "Try: "Are you the right person for this, or should I connect with someone else?"
